Charlotte Douglas International Airport had an increase of 11.7 percent in total passengers in 2007 which vaulted the airport to 30th place on the Airports Council International annual list.  Slightly more than 33 million people arrived at and departed from Charlotte.  That puts Charlotte just behind Miami, Florida and Munich, Germany it total passengers.  It also puts Charlotte way behind the busiest airport in the world.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International airport took the top spot again in 2007 with more than 89 million passengers and retains the title as world’s busiest airport.  Chicago’s O’Hare came in second with 76 million passengers and London’s Heathrow came in third with 68 million passengers.

Another interesting thing that came out of the report was that ACI expects the number of passengers traveling to double by the year 2025.  In 2007, 4.8 billion people arrived at and departed from the world’s airports, an increase of 6.8% over 2006.  The Long-term traffic forecast predicts that by 2025 that number will double to over nine billion passengers.

And you thought security lines were long now!
