Severe Weather Strikes, Viewer Really Reacts!
Plenty of severe thunderstorms have moved through central North Carolina the past few days…and not everyone is happy about the weather coverage!
I’d like to share with you a viewer e-mail we received last night after a tornado warning was issued for Lee and Harnett counties. As usual, when there is a tornado warning, we interrupt programming until we feel there is no longer a tornado threat to the warned area. Sometimes that interruption lasts a few minutes, sometimes longer. Sometimes there is a very popular program on, sometimes there isn’t.
On this particular night, it was Celebrity Family Feud and Carlos was very unhappy about his show being interrupted by our weather coverage. Now, I must say, I would normally never violate the trust of our viewers and put their thoughts out there for everyone to read…BUT… I don’t think Carlos is really this viewers name because he left us a bogus return e-mail address. I also have a feeling Carlos will not be one of our viewers in the near or distant future.
I would also never mock our viewers in any way…BUT I just don’t understand how our coverage of life-threatening weather could make someone this angry. The decisions we make when it comes to interrupting programming are taken very seriously. Most times, a crawl across the bottom of the screen takes care of the warning. However, when there is a tornado warning and when we have seen the potential damage these storms can do and the lives they can destroy…you bet your britches we are breaking into programming. But, we would never interrupt programming unless we think it is completely necessary…and we would never do it for longer than we had to.
So, here is the viewer e-mail we received last night to newstips@wncn.com. I have taken the liberty to clean up the foul language (not the grammar) in the e-mail so it is fit for all readers. I think you’ll agree this e-mail seems somewhat ridiculous considering the circumstances.
Dear NBC 17,
Would you please stop abusing the interupt button and bringing us weather alerts that dont matter. This station p***** me and eveyone i know off to no end becuase of all the stupid a** interuptions. We really dont need a special 15 minute update every time it freaking rains outside. Its not we could do anything about hard storming. STOP F****** INTERUPTING TV SHOWS. I HATE YOUR F****** CHANNEL!
sincerely,
viewer who will make it a point not to watch your station ever again
