Bertha Strengthens, Weakens, Misses Carolina

Our first hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic season has gone through quite a few intensity and directional changes the past few days.  But at the end of it all, it looks like Bertha will bother Bermuda, a few ships and some fish…and not the East Coast.

Over the holiday weekend things got a little interesting with the official track from the National Hurricane Center.  Although North Carolina and the rest of the East Coast were never in the cone of uncertainty…there was a pretty significant directional shift that pointed Bertha our way.  Here’s what the map looked like…

Luckily, this week, a weakness in the Bermuda high allowed the hurricane to turn back to the north and that is represented in the most recent track below.

There was another Hurricane Bertha back in 1996 that did hit the North Carolina coast.  1996 was the same year Hurricane Fran hit our area in September, but we also had Bertha in July of the same year.  For a while there we thought the Bertha of 2008 might be a repeat of 1996, but it looks like that will not be the case.  Let’s just hope that the “F” storm this year, Fay, doesn’t want any part of the Tar Heel state.
