Little Rain, Big Drought Map Changes

In the past week the Raleigh-Durham Airport has only seen 0.44 inches of rain.  That is in the time period from Tuesday, April 15 to Monday April 21.  It is in that time that data is pulled to make the updated drought map released yesterday.  Now, .44 inches of rain is not a lot…but there were a lot of improvements on this week’s drought map.

In fact, the map has not looked this good since the beginning of last August!

Here’s a look at that map from last summer, before the drought got really bad.

And after looking back at each week from the last year, the drought was at its worst the week of December 20, 2007.  That was when most of the state was in an exceptional drought.  Here’s a look at the drought map from the third week of December.

And finally, the drought map released yesterday (below), Thursday, April 24, 2008 is the best looking map we’ve seen for a long time.  And with more rain coming this weekend and next week, hopefully the improvements will continue!

You know, I’ve lived down here all my life, and I still call this drought thing “summer”.
And these improvements I generally refer to as “spring”.

We had a really hard summer last year, and are having a really great spring this year. (Such is the view of the unqualified layman.) :)
