No Water With Dinner = Drought Help?

We all know how dry it’s been in North Carolina this summer and we know water restrictions are in full effect most everywhere…but one restriction really has me scratching my weather clicker.

The drought is not something to take lightly; sure it’s lowering our recreation lake levels and killing our yards.  The drought is also having a major impact on our reservoir levels and on farmers who make their living of the land.  So, my question tonight is two-fold:  Will restricting restaurants from giving out water really save the community from no rain on the menu?  When is the last time you went to a restaurant and they actually brought you water WITHOUT asking!?

I’m a big proponent of the “every little bit helps” theory.  Whether you are talking about recycling, saving money or water restrictions…having town officials limit restaurants from giving you water doesn’t do much good when restaurants today don’t normally give you water UNLESS you ask for it.  The rule is about as useful as the law prohibiting elephants from plowing cotton fields…I mean; really, does anyone use an elephant to plow cotton fields anymore?  (Seriously, I don’t know…but if they do it in North Carolina, it’s illegal!)

I remember going out to eat when I was younger and the waiter would bring you water the same time he welcomed you to the restaurant.  Now, they stop by, say hello, “I’ll be right with you” and then they come back to take your drink and appetizer order.  Years ago the practice of bringing water to every table was stopped to save the restaurants money.  Not because it was a tough year in the rain department.  By not bringing water to every table, owners save money on dishwashing and dishwashers.

Anyway…we’re still in a drought, so do what you can…and for heaven’s sake…please don’t plow your fields with an elephant!

hi from Romsey Australia
No Water With Dinner is not too bad at a local restaurant
but how about coming home to your farm and all your precious water tanks have been emptied by Water Thieves ( bandits ).Here the locals have had to use armed guards to protect water located at isolated dams on their property.
The only water they serve in restaurants here is bottled water and you have to pay for it.

We are now in 2008 and entering our eleventh year of drought
I hope your drought breaks soon.
