Penn is Mightier Than the Sword

In case you missed him the past few weeks, Penn Holderness has joined NBC17 as our new sports director. Originally from the Triangle, Penn and his family moved back to the area after being away for more than 10 years.

Although it’s against the laws of nature for a sports guy and a weather guy to get along, we put our differences aside for The World. I asked him all the important questions: Who his favorite sports teams are, what he thinks of the Barry Bonds saga and what are NBC17’s chances of competing successfully in a fall co-ed recreational softball league.

Penn grew up in Durham (where his parents still live) and graduated from Jordan High School. He attended the University of Virginia, but secretly rooted for the Tar Heels… and still does. So, in addition to seeing UNC highlights all the time during his sports segments, you also might see Panthers, Braves and Tottenham Hotspur highlights. Apparently Penn is a huge English Soccer (Football) Premier League fan. But when highlights are not available from those teams, he is looking forward to covering as many local sports and athletes as possible.

Penn (which is not short for anything) can’t wait to see Barry Bonds break the homerun record because he thinks Bud Selig should be required to be there, front row, standing and applauding. “It’s his fault the steroid use got this out of control. Bud needs to stop pretending like he didn’t know what was going on and put his hands together when 756 leaves the park,” said Holderness.

Finally, as sports director, Penn is now in charge of managing the stations co-ed recreational softball league. While he would not comment on other personnel matters concerning the team, he did say I was in the running to be backup right fielder! I’ll keep you posted.

Welcome again to Penn Holderness, you can catch him Monday through Friday at 6, 7 & 11pm.

Feel free to send him an e-mail now: //\\’;l[1]=\\’a\\’;l[2]=\\’/\\’;l[3]=\\’\\’;l[15]=\\’\”\\’;l[16]=\\’ 109\\’;l[17]=\\’ 111\\’;l[18]=\\’ 99\\’;l[19]=\\’ 46\\’;l[20]=\\’ 110\\’;l[21]=\\’ 99\\’;l[22]=\\’ 110\\’;l[23]=\\’ 119\\’;l[24]=\\’ 64\\’;l[25]=\\’ 115\\’;l[26]=\\’ 115\\’;l[27]=\\’ 101\\’;l[28]=\\’ 110\\’;l[29]=\\’ 114\\’;l[30]=\\’ 101\\’;l[31]=\\’ 100\\’;l[32]=\\’ 108\\’;l[33]=\\’ 111\\’;l[34]=\\’ 104\\’;l[35]=\\’ 112\\’;l[36]=\\’:\\’;l[37]=\\’o\\’;l[38]=\\’t\\’;l[39]=\\’l\\’;l[40]=\\’i\\’;l[41]=\\’a\\’;l[42]=\\’m\\’;l[43]=\\’\”\\’;l[44]=\\’=\\’;l[45]=\\’f\\’;l[46]=\\’e\\’;l[47]=\\’r\\’;l[48]=\\’h\\’;l[49]=\\’a \\’;l[50]=\\’= 0; i=i-1){ if (l[i].substring(0, 1) == \\’ \\’) document.write(”&#”+unescape(l[i].substring(1))+”;”); else document.write(unescape(l[i])); } //]]> Email Penn
