Johnston Co. Man Bakes Award Winning Pound Cake

To say he was shocked would be an understatement, but when Cleveland resident Dan West saw a third place ribbon beside his entry, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

Record Last Day For State Fair Attendance

RALEIGH, N.C. - Record attendance on the final day didn’t prevent the 2008 N.C. State Fair from falling below last year’s overall turnout.
Sunday’s attendance totaled 101,775, breaking the mark of 98,433 on the last day of the 2007 fair. This year’s total attendance of 765,067 was down about 11 percent below last year’s record of [...]

What to look for today…

Today’s the last weekday of the Fair.  Can you believe it’s almost over already?!  Well as usual, Brian Long (or “B Lo” as Candice Combs and I like to call him) has hooked us up again with the day-of tip sheet.  Today’s highlights include the “Farm Animal Frenzy”, a tobacco “mocktion”, a dress that will [...]

“Must-Eats” at the Fair by the one person who’s tried it ALL: a pregnant lady.

I think I’ve found my calling:  “Official Fair Food-Taster.”  Yeah… I like the sounds of that.  I like the tastes of that even more.  And since most of you haven’t had the benefit of an entire week at the Fair as I have, and because most of you don’t have the added benefit of pregnant-chic tastebuds [...]

Finding Lost Money Is Always Good

The Department of State Treasurer is helping reunite people with their money and other unclaimed property at the N.C. Cash booth. Unclaimed property consists of bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds and contents of safe deposit boxes that typically have been abandoned for one to five years.

Performing ‘Magic’ Poodles, What?

So you know a magic poodle show is going to be good when the trainer uses one of the animals to fake relieve itself on a bunch of children.
After that, it was all pretty much a blur.

Allow us to help relieve your hunger…

Today is “Food Lion Hunger Relief Day” at the Fair.  That means you’ll get free admission if you bring 4 cans of food along with you when you arrive.  In my book, that also means it’s a great day to relieve your own hunger.  But then, what day isn’t a great to day to stuff your face at the Fair?  [...]

Dance Your Pants Off!

Dancing your pants off is easy to do when you’re a size 32″ and are wearing a size 60″ pair of pants!  Thankfully the winner of the “Subway Pants Dance Revolution” had an extra pair on underneath the ones he ripped off halfway through the show.  And yes, in spite of the sound of things, [...]

Bring your tissues to watch the 82nd Airborne Chorus…

… because they’ll bring tears to your eyes.  Not only do they sing beautifully, but they’re in uniform when they do it.  And when your country’s at war and you know half the people watching have family and friends overseas fighting right now… well you’d have to be the tin man to make it through [...]

Tractor Pull: It’s An Easy Ride

Too tired to walk the fairgrounds? That’s OK. You can take the Tram.
For your convenience, and for those of you with kids, who have trouble walking or may just be too tuckered out from riding The Claw over and over again, the Tram offers free rides throughout the fairgrounds.

Craftsmanship To Be Judged At Thursday Carpenter Contest

RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Labor will hold a contest for apprentice carpenters on Thursday at the N.C. State Fair.
Apprentices will compete in the 23rd Annual Carpentry Apprentice Contest from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry and Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler will present awards to the winners at [...]

State Fair Dollar Menu!

Money is tight for everyone this year, and the State Fair can get expensive.  When you consider ticket prices, rides, games, and food… the dollars add up pretty quickly.  But not at the booth for the North Raleigh Optimist’s Club.  EVERYTHING at their booth is just $1!  Granted, the menu is a bit limited (see photo [...]

Economic Friendly Ways To Enjoy Fair

The North Carolina State can be a drain on your wallet any year, but with the economy in a downward spiral in 2008, many families are feeling the effects even more.

Our “tip-off” from the man in-the-know…

Public Affairs Officer Brian Long takes such good care of us (and you!).  Everyday he sends out a little “tip sheet” with what to look out for at the Fair that day.  Today’s events include “Military Appreciation Day”, a big Fair anniversary, some boogeying… and more!  Read on to see what Brian clued us in [...]
