Wake Co. Schools encourage cultural pride
Hispanics represent one of the largest minority groups in the United States. By 2050, experts predict that the Latino population will account for 29 percent of the U.S. population. For Hispanic students, success in school is a complex process, dependent on both the actions of parents and teachers. The Hispanic/Latino Program in the Prevention Services Department and the Latino Coalition of the Wake County Public School System are hosting the “¡Somos Unicos! ¡Somos Latinos! - Holding the Key to Your Success!” (We are Unique! We are Latinos”) Conference at Knightdale High School, 100 Bryan Chalk Lane, Knightdale, North Carolina on Saturday, March 15, 2008, from 9 am - 3:00 pm.
The nationwide initiatve helps Hispanic children between the ages of 9-14 build and enhance their own self-esteem, mental health, decision-making and assertiveness skills, and to prevent the harmful consequences of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. The ¡Soy Unica! ¡Soy Latina! project encourages cultural pride by emphasizing the strengths inherent in the Hispanic culture initiative.
Organizers hope to:
- To introduce Latino students to motivational speakers from our schools and our community who have achieved success in their professional fields.
To inform Latino students and parents about different educational opportunities and school programs available throughout our community.
To empower Latino students to make informed and productive decisions about their future.
To help middle school students transition into high school.
