Raleigh supports V-Day

Raleigh VDay Pour House ShowThis weekend, the Rialto Theatre in the Five Points neighborhood and The Pour House in Downtown Raleigh hosted community productions of The Vagina Monologues, to raise money for a Wake County non-profit. The recent shows, produced locally by area volunteers, were a part of this year’s Raleigh V-Day 2008 Community Campaign and benefited the Literacy Council of Wake County, a Raleigh-based non-profit focused on teaching adults how to read and write better. The organization, founded the WILL Initiative (Women Improving Lives through Literacy) at the NC Correctional Institute for Women to improve the lives of female inmates through literacy instruction.   The Vagina Monologues is a funny, sassy, inspirational play written by Eve Ensler that benefits local charities that work to eliminate violence against women. V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of The Vagina Monologues.

2008’s V-Day benefit productions are taking place all over the world between January 1st and March 31st.  Find upcoming productions near you: V-Day Productions. All of these events, produced locally by volunteer organizers, will raise funds and awareness for local beneficiaries who are working to end violence against women and girls. vdaylogo.gif

This year’s performances will honor hurricane Katrina Warriors for their strength and resilience in the face of devastating loss. The spotlight will  highlight the daily ongoing work of women in their communities who have steadfastly kept New Orleans and the gulf south alive with little to no resources. It will hopefully bring attention and funds so that women may be safe and empowered in a city whose pulse beats like no other. To learn more about you can volunteer with V-Day in your city, community, college, university or your high school visit the V-Day Website.
