Pinecones On The Grill
When I went on a school retreat with my daughter’s school a few years back we had to make a bonfire for the kids. There was a guy who was an experienced outdoors-man and he showed me how to build a good bonfire. The one thing I learned was that pine cones burn easily and put off a good amount of heat.
Let’s now fast forward to this year and a chimney charcoal starter that I decided to buy. I swear by charcoal when grilling; but I was getting tired of using lighter fluid or having issues with non responsive Matchlight charcoal that wouldn’t work well after the bag had been opened for awhile.
So I decided to try the chimney method and I love it. It kind of reminds me of starting a fire like an outdoors-man would. So even though you could put newspaper in the chimney to start the fire, I have tried pine cones with a little pine straw to help. And boy does it work.
I put the chimney with charcoal over the pinecones and pretty soon we are smokin’.
So I figured this is cheaper than using lighter fluid or the more expensive Matchlight, and since I have an abudance of pinecones in my pine tree filled back yard it’s a natural way to clean up the yard while grilling a delicious meal.
