Salt salt salt everywhere

After visiting the doctor, and thinking about better nutrition; I decided to see if I could watch my sodium intake and still enjoy eating.

They say the average American consumes up to two times the amount of sodium recommended by the USDA.

Even though I don’t salt my food at the table, I am amazed at the amount of sodium hidden in food.  Mind you, it is mostly from processed food.  I love pickle relish (75 mg per tsp.) ketchup (360 mg per 2 Tbl.), even bread, (250 mg per 2 slices.  So even if you prepard say a lean hamburger (75mg), with cheese (190mg) and added the ketchup and relish you have: 950 mg of sodium and wash it down with a glass of skim milk(120mg): and you are now at 1070 mg of sodium.  The recommended amount for a day is about 2400mg or 1 teaspoon.   Did I mention, that you still would have two more meals to eat for the day?!  Also if you are like me, a little cole slaw or salad is always good with a burger… more sodium.

Then, the stories I have heard about sodium in restaurant food are amazing.`

We all have our work cut out for us if we want to stay withing the dietary guidelines for sodium intake, but at least now I am aware that most of the salt I get is coming from processed food and not from cooking additions.
