RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Rep. Mary McAllister is accusing state auditors of targeting her in “a prolonged political witch hunt.”
A state audit released Monday said staff and computers at McAllister’s nonprofit organization were improperly used for political work on McAllister’s behalf. McAllister is the executive director of Fayetteville-based Operation Sickle Cell.
A prepared statement from McAllister said neither the nonprofit’s board nor management authorized any political activity. The statement also pointed out that only a small number of files reviewed had political content.
The audit said no state money had been misused. McAllister also was scrutinized last year. The State Board of Elections fined her campaign last year for receiving improper loan repayments and unlawful campaign contributions.
