27 Dresses is a Delight!

27-dresses-pose.jpg

This past weekend I was in the mood for a chick flick but I didn’t want to hit the theater.  I was perfectly comfortable on my sofa sipping coffee so I decided to see what In Demand had to offer.  Lo and behold, the early 2008 hit, 27 Dresses, was just released!  I chose to rent it and I ended up watching it twice.  It was that cute!

Dresses stars Kathryn Heigel as a Jane Nichols a woman absolutely smitten by weddings and she is secretly in love with her boss, George (played by Ed Burns).  What throws a crimp into Jane’s life is the return of her sister, Tess, who strikes up an immediate relationship with George…and they become engatged to get married!  After being a bridesmaid for 27 katherineheigl.jpgweddings, Jane has to endure being the Maid of Honor at her sister’s own wedding to the man she would rather marry.  Throwing another crimp into her life, she “meets” a columnist for the local newspaper, Kevin Doyle (played by James Marsden), who is secretly doing a story on her pathetic life as a bridesmaid.  BUT, does the wedding go off?  Who falls in love with whom?  You’ll have to see the movie to find out for yourself.

This movie is both cute and corny.  It’s the quintessential chick flick, no doubt.  In one particular scene, Jane and Kevin, stuck in the country during a rain storm, find relief until the storm is over at the local dive bar.  From one drink to several, before you know it Jane and Kevin are singing Elton John’s, “Benny and the Jets” to the top of their lungs and on the top of the bar.  Loved that scene!  Encouraged me to reminisce about my younger days.  :)

There were several very cute scenes but I don’t want to give them all away.  Just see it for yourself.

I give 27 Dresses

Borrowing a phrase from my colleague, Ms. Teran Rankin (cuz I know she won’t mind :) ), a very interesting press release came across my email box yesterday that I just had to share -

How ’bout that?  An independent film being cast and filmed a stone’s throw from downtown Raleigh.  Check out the website for the inspiration behind the story.  If produced and directed correctly, it could easily be one of the most romantic independent films to come along in a long time.

Can’t wait to see it all unfold…

Until next time, see YOU at the movies!

theater.jpgIt’s Christmas!  You know what that means.  Never mind the annual visit from the jolly old elf himself or the anxious little ones ready to open their gifts or that scrumptious feast that makes your mouth water.  Believe it or not there’s more to Christmas then…well…Christmas.  There’s also the end of the year-gotta-make-the-cut-for-awards-season MAJOR blockbuster film releases.  This Christmas is no exception.

Opening this weekend are three highly anticipated and Golden Globe nominated films: Charlie Wilson’s War, Sweeney Todd, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.  Also opening in wide release this weekend is the action adventure film, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, and the romantic comedy, P.S. I Love You

All of these movies are expected to turn the tides of the charts.  You’ll have to check back for my Results post on the 26th to see how they, recent releases, and your favorites fared out for the BIG Holiday weekend.

BewitchedIt’s Saturday night and while there are several options on TV - the Hurricanes game, a few holiday movies, etc. - my husband and I decide to watch the 2005 theatrical release, Bewitched starring Will Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Shirley MacLaine.  Neither of us had seen it.  We had thought about seeing it when it was released but the critics gave it such horrible reviews that we said we’d wait.  It just so happened to be on Saturday night and after a long day of cleaning house (me) and selling Christmas trees (the hubby), we decided then was as good a time as any.

I am happy to say we BOTH enjoyed it!  It was corny but cute (when is corny not cute?).  Of course, both of us like Will Farrell movies (most of them anyway) and with Shirley MacLaine as Endora, Samantha’s mother, well, it had to be good!  That’s a perfect part for Ms. MacLane.

Bewitched is about a fledling film star, Jack Wyatt (Will Farrell), and his need to improve his career.  He decides he wants to be the star of a newer version of the original Bewitched.  When I say “the star” I mean “THE star”.  So, he hires an unknown actress to play Samantha (enter Nicole Kidman as Isabel Bigelow).  At the local book store he notices a woman with a similar nose twitch to Samantha and he follows her to a coffee shop where she sits and reads her new book.  He introduces himself to her and before you know it, she’s auditioning (and winning) the part of Samantha.  The film follows the pair as they discover who they each are as individuals and together.  The egocentric Jack becomes the caring Jack and Isabel finds her place in mortal society.

I definitely give this movie -

No, not the things I wear on my feet. I’m talking about my team - the Red Sox. Now, why on earth would I write anything about baseball in the middle of a blog about film? Ah..HA! Let me happily explain.

It’s about 11pm and while I should be catching some much needed zzzz’s, instead I watch my Sox as they battle to take the World Series lead 2-1 with a win this evening. So, while sitting here I got to thinking about the last World Series that my Sox were in - the 2004 Series. You know…the one they WON. In the weeks leading up to Game 7 there was this little known film being made, a film that had it’s final scenes shooting as the Sox won that game. The film was Fever Pitch and I got to thinking about it tonight.

In my head, all the signature songs that epitomize a true Red Sox fan - Sweet Caroline (by Neil Diamond), Tessy (by the Drop Kick Murphys), and of course, Dirty Water (by the Standelles) - all songs that play in the film play over and over in my brain. In constant repeat are the words, “….love that Dirty Water…Boston, you’re my home…” and “Sweet Caroline…bum..bum…bum…good times never seems so good - so good! so good! so good!” etc. and as they play, scenes from Fever Pitch coincide with the tunes, almost like my own little music video…and I smile. I love that movie…Fever Pitch…and I better tell you all about it or I will not have done my duty in this Blog.

Pitch is about a math teacher played by Jimmy Fallon and his two loves - baseball, specifically the Boston Red Sox, and his girl played by Drew Barrymore. It’s a story about finding love and endless possibilities. According to Jimmy’s character, Ben Wrightman, his being able to find love is about as probable as his team winning the World Series. He finds the love he thought was so elusive in the form of ambitious business consultant, Lindsey, and when he does so, he realizes that you know what - ANYTHING is possible!

Fever Pitch is cute…probably cuter for we Red Sox Fans…and I’m sitting here tonight just thinking about when I’ll watch it again (yes, I own it). Probably after the World Series is over and hopefully after my Sox have won it.

Want to come over for a special screening of Fever Pitch? Shoot me an email! Just kidding. Got any movies that remind you of good times? Do share!

See YOU at the movies,

Lisa :)
