Here’s an interesting fact from “The Green Book” by author Elizabeth Rogers.

Turning off the water while brushing your teeth saves up to five gallons of water a day. This is the amount of water the average person in Africa uses a DAY for cooking, drinking, cleaning and bathing.

Instead of buying bottled water, buy a water filter or a pitcher with a filter to purify tap water. Filters last a while and aren’t very expensive compared to bottled water.

Paul Tukey, author of The Organic Lawn Care Manual, has put a lot of effort into changing that. Tukey is a co-host and executive producer at HGTV, the publisher of People, Places and Plants magazine and was named 2006 Communicator of the Year by the American Horticultural Society. He is also national spokesman for Safelawns.org, a group dedicated to “creating a broad-based coalition of non- and for-profit organizations committed to educating society about the benefits of environmentally responsible lawn care and gardening, and effect a quantum change in consumer and industry behavior.” (more…)

Durham Energy/Water Conservation Event

The Clean Energy Durham program will be holding a green/energy event on April 12. The “Slow-Flow, Warm Glow” water and conservation fair will provide energy saving products to purchase or some that will be given away. Event goers will also learn about rainwater reclamation and other “green” issues. Event will be held between 1-4 p.m. April 12on the south side of Oval Park.

Buy Rain Barrels At H2Oh! Fair

071025_barrel.jpgChapel Hill’s Stormwater Management Division is sponsoring a rain barrel sale and H2Oh! Education Fair on Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eubanks Road Park and Ride Lot. Two styles of rain barrels will be offered and may be pre-ordered, with payment and pick up required on the day of the event. Hillsborough’s Mark Ray will sell 55-gallon rain barrels for $65 each. Rain Water Solutions’ 65-gallon rain barrels will cost $90. Please e-mail Wendy Smith at wwsmith@townofchapelhill.org to pre-order. Pre-orders are limited to two per household due to limited quantities available. Vendors will demonstrate how to set up the rain barrels on April 5.

The accompanying education fair will teach people about composting, watershed issues, rain gardens, waterwise landscaping, and how we can improve our water quality, maintain streamside buffers for clean water and healthy creeks, and prepare for hurricanes. Free low-flow showerheads will be given out by OWASA to their customers.
