Wake County will conduct a Household Hazardous Waste Pilot Program in October and November to collect residential household hazardous waste each Saturday at its two current locations. Citizens and local governments have requested increased collection of Household Hazardous Waste by the County. The purpose of the pilot program is to evaluate the potential for expanding Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Residential household hazardous waste will be collected from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the North Wake Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 9037 Deponie Drive, Raleigh, and at the South Wake Multi-Material Recycling Facility at 6130 Old Smithfield Road, Apex.

Acceptable items include; paint, motor oil, cooking oil, batteries, household cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, mercury thermometers, acids, bases, automobile fluids, florescent light bulbs, poisons, thinners, wood preservatives, lacquers, polishes, antifreeze, kerosene and fuel oil.Household Hazardous Waste Pilot Program to Begin Saturday

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — The home furnishings retailer Ikea says it will no longer offer disposable shopping bags at its North American stores.

In March 2007, the company said it would charge 5 cents per bag to discourage the use of disposable bags, with the proceeds going to an environmental charity. The company with U.S. headquarters in the Philadelphia suburb of Conshohocken says that cut bag use by 92 percent.

Starting Wednesday, Ikea won’t offer any disposable plastic or paper shopping bags. Sturdy, reusable shopping bags will still be available for 59 cents.

According to the Triangle Business Journal, Progress Energy Carolinas and NC GreenPower intorduced a new program Wednesday that will help utility customers reduce their carbon footprints.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Dozens of volunteers will gather to stencil water protection messages and brightly colored fish on storm drains located throughout the N.C. State Fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 4. The event is being organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality, in partnership with the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Stormwater runoff is the number one cause of water pollution in North Carolina and the nation. The stenciled images provide a strong visual reminder that everything that flows into storm drains also flows into our creeks, streams, rivers and ocean. (more…)

One of the largest green communities in the Triangle is now opening its doors in Chatham County.

Developers and Chatham County officials introduced the Brier Chapel community to the public Thursday. This development was constructed to provide homeowners with greener homes including increased solar capabilities and increased water conservation.

They will build over 2,400 homes and 900 acres will be open space for parks and trails. About 600,000 square feet will be dedicated to retail and office space.

President of the Chatham County Economic Development Corporation said Brier Chapel is a perfect fit for the area.
 
“It also is very consistent with the values that people hold dear in Chatham County; the open space, the integration of art.  It also promotes sustainable energy and building practices,” Reid said.

The developer also donated land to rebuild the Woods Charter School just down the street from the community.

They will hold their VIP celebration and grand opening on Saturday.
