Nobel Winner Talks Tactics On Climate Change

RICHMOND - Mohan Munasinghe says world leaders recognize there are problems with poverty, energy and the environment, but what they don’t understand is that they are all connected.

“You don’t want to start solving problems piecemeal here and make the other problem worse,” said Munasinghe, vice chairman of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The panel and former Vice President Al Gore won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work on climate change. (more…)

Celebrity Neighbors Begley, Nye Carry Eco-Grudge

LOS ANGELES (AP) - On a tree-lined corner of Studio City filled with modest homes, flower gardens and neighbors who chat across back fences, two wiry celebrities are engaged in a green grudge match.

The good-natured competition between actor Ed Begley Jr. and Bill Nye, the host of the educational series “Bill Nye, the
Science Guy” began when Nye moved into the neighborhood two years ago. Since then the two moderately famous and slightly geeky environmentalists have matched wits over whose home can leave a smaller carbon footprint.

Neighbor Frema Rood, 83, who lives between the two houses, said the competition started the day after Bill moved into the neighborhood.

“Bill announced it: ‘I’m going to best Ed Begley at his own game. I’m going to get him,”‘ she recalled. “He ordered panels for the garage, then rain barrels, then he had his windows done and he put in a vegetable garden.” (more…)

Free Programs Help Celebrate Earth Day

The North Carolina Botanical Garden will hold two free programs to celebrate Earth Day.

On Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m., a “Growing Green Earth Day Tour” will take place on the grounds and trails of the Botanical Garden. Garden Director Peter White will conduct the tour.

On Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m., people can take part in a free lecture with retired assistant director Ken Moore about the passions that inspire people to garden. The “Why We Garden-A Conservation with Ken Moore” lecture includes a catered reception in the Carolina Inn’s Hill Ballroom.

Although registration is not required, it is advisable to call 919-962-0522 ahead of time to reserve a place.
