Fayetteville-Cumberland Chamber Goes Green
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

The Fayetteville-Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce announced a new initiative Wednesday to “GO GREEN” by not only promoting environmentally friendly business practices, but by adopting those practices itself.

“Green business practices are good business practices - they save money and resources and help the bottom line,” said Doug Peters, Chamber President and CEO in a press release. “The chamber wants to ensure that it is one of the leaders in the conservation area.”

Peters said the biggest step the chamber is taking is to switch from a printed newsletter to an online version.

Each month more than 4,500 copies of the 12-page newsletter are mailed to chamber members and stakeholders.

Other steps the chamber is taking include the formation of an office GREEN Team, which will be in charge of recycling paper, purchasing eco-friendly office supply products, raising employee awareness to conserve energy and reduce admissions from technology equipment.

EPA Offers Blog For Public Feedback
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Ever wanted to tell EPA what you thought on an environmental topic?  Each week, the EPA offers an open-ended blog entry for comments.

This week’s question:

When it comes to computers, do you minimize energy use?
It’s time to go back to school, so many Americans are replacing their computers.  You can look for the Energy Star label to find one that uses less electricity.  When you get your computer home, you can choose energy-saving settings like when to turn off the monitor.

EPA Wants Public Comment On Air Issues
Monday, August 25th, 2008

WASHINGTON — The EPA is opening a 30-day public comment period on its recommendations for areas to be designated as out of compliance with the agency’s 24-hour fine particle standards.

On Aug. 19 and 20, EPA notified states and tribes of its recommendations for areas to be designated as “attainment” or “nonattainment” for fine particle pollution, also called PM2.5. Exposure to fine particle pollution is linked to a variety of serious health problems, including aggravated asthma, chronic bronchitis, nonfatal heart attacks, and premature death.

States and tribes have an opportunity to respond to EPA’s recommendations, and provide new information or analyses if appropriate. EPA will consider those responses, along with the public comment, before making its final decisions. EPA must issue final designations by Dec. 18.

EPA will accept public comment for 30 days after a notice is published in the Federal Register.

Instructions for submitting comments are available at www.epa.gov/pmdesignations.
