Off the Bench - A look at what’s going on in the world of Triangle sports

I love to hear about local athletes who have moved on and are showcasing their talent in other schools or places.  They are a great example of how much potential we have in our local communities.

Josh Adams is an example of this.  The Cary native got offers from schools including Clemson, NC State, and Maryland before choosing to attend Wake Forest University.  Before moving to Winston Salem, he had a successful career at Cary High.  He was rated by Rivals.com as the 10th best running back in the nation for the class of 2006.  Adams had 2,884 rushing yards as a senior and college scouts took notice.

He was red shirted last year, but in the three games he has played in this season as a Demon Deacon he leads the team in rushing, with a total of 186 yards this season.  He has scored two touchdowns, and continues to improve each game.

Some of the players in our backyards right now will be in the same place one day.  The video below, from rivals.com, has a few clips of Adams from his senior year at Cary High in Fall of 2005.

What other local athletes did you know from your community that have gone on and made you proud?

Season tickets for Wake Forest Football games are not hard to get.  It is actually cheaper to buy season tickets for Wake’s games than it is to buy one ticket to a Nebraska Football game in Lincoln.  Needless to say, there was a ton of red all over Groves Stadium in Winston-Salem on September 8th.

There were a lot of “firsts” going on in Winston on Saturday, September 8th.

It was Wake’s first home game of the 2007 football season defending their first ACC Championship title since 1970.

It was Brett Hodges’ first start as Wake’s QB.  What most people do not know is that he was the second string quarterback behind Ben Mauk last year.  At Groves Stadium the first game of the season last year against Syracuse, Mauk got hurt and Hodges was on the injured list at the same time.  This was when third string Riley Skinner stepped up.  Coach Jim Grobe had full confidence in Hodges taking over as QB today.

This game was the first time the Orange Bowl Committee has come to Wake Forest to present a large check for their participation in the Orange Bowl.It was the first time Wake has secured a corporate partner for their football facilities- their field is now called the BB&T field at Wake Forest University.  There has been mixed feelings about the partnership but it will put Wake in a great place to compete with the other ACC school’s facilities.

That Saturday was the first time I have ever seen a crowd tailgating two hours before a home game at Groves Stadium (I mean, at BB&T Field at Wake Forest University).  In the twenty odd years that I have been going to Wake Forest Football games, I have NEVER seen a crowd so big tailgating.  Tailgating is something you hear about at Clemson and South Carolina, not little old WakeForest.  There were a ton of Nebraska faithful out and about, but Wake had a good support system there behind them from two hours before kick-off until the end of the fourth quarter.

Wake missed some great opportunities throughout the game. Nebraska gave up a few yards in penalties that made it seem like neither team wanted to win too badly.  They have shown good improvement since their season opener in Boston College, but like Coach Grobe said in post game- they just didn’t make enough plays to win the game.

After the first quarter, there was no water to be found.  Seriously.  The concessions ALL ran out of water.  That combined with the 90 degree weather sent a lot of people to the EMT tent.  Little Wake was not ready for big time football, with full stands and people actually needing the concessions.

There were a lot of first today, and for the first time in a long time there is a lot of promise in the Wake Forest Football program and positive outlook from the fans, players, and staff.

Hi, thanks for visiting my blog!  As I start to blog and vlog about the college sports happenings, I figured that you may want to know a little bit about my background.

I am a graduate of NC State, and a Wolfpack faithful, I love Wolfpack football and basketball.  However, being from Winston-Salem I was raised a Demon Deacon and can’t help but cheer for them, except when they are playing the Pack.  I usually catch a lot of slack since they are both a part of the Atlantic Division of the ACC.  I am also related to many UNC fans.  My uncle works at the Smith Center, and some of my relatives own Ramses- the animal that is the real reason behind the mascot for UNC, but I will never own up to this fact if you try to ask me about this in person.  I guess you could say I am a little mixed up but my priorities are straight (GO PACK!!).  I love watching any and all of the Tobacco Road teams, especially when they are playing eachother.

When I was little I always wanted to have my own sports segment and thought I would call it “On the Court with Court”.  Plans change, but I guess in some way this is a small dream come true to have my own blog to write and vlog about anything sports that is of interest to the Tobacco Road faithful.
