Off the Bench - A look at what’s going on in the world of Triangle sports

KC Rivers courtesy of http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/photos?photoId=1771141&gameId=280060228From the Clemson/UNC game Sunday evening:

  • In the bonus:  Clemson Students—-I wish I had a picture of the students from the game last night, I’ve heard more people talk about their shirts than the actual game.  They had a picture of Oliver Purnell on the front and it said: “We’re down with OPP- Oliver Purnell’s Posse”.  Now that was a fashion statement, and it got that song stuck in my head: “You down with OPP- Yeah, You know me.”  You can sort of see the students’ shirts in the background behind KC Rivers in the pic.  State students are also sporting new shirts this year that look like Sid’s red blazer on the front, with a Block S on the lapel and on the back they say “Fear the Blazer”.

  • Double BonusOliver Purnell—-Who could have missed Purnell’s blazer….It looks like Sid Lowe is starting a fad for the ACC teams when they play UNC.  And

Roy didn’t miss it either, his first thoughts when he saw Lowe wear his red jacket:  “About the same thing I did when I saw Oliver [Purnell’s] orange one yesterday. I said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m glad I’m not wearing that one.’Oliver Purnell courtesy of scout.comPurnell is in the grey blazer here.

you trying to give page 2’s uni watch some competition, court?

OP’s orange blazer has got to rival this tie — http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/50/506509.jpg — as the ugliest fashion statement by an acc basketball coach in a while (sid actually can sort of pull off the red blazer, imo).

the opp shirts sort of remind me of the “jackie manuel has a posse” ones carolina students used to wear in ‘04 and ‘05. unfortunately, unc cracked down on the production of them because they weren’t officially licensed by the school (and also because it was illegal to put a current players face on something for sale).

i hope the opp shirts are licensed by clemson because i hope the students keep wearing them. they’re pretty cool.

I LOVE this ~ you of all people know I don’t get into college sports (NFL only, in my novice nature), but at the same time, THIS is what I love about sports: the comradery and unity ~ the creativity in cheering each other on. So long as the sportmanship stays clean, I am SUCH an advocate of athletics!!! I would have enjoyed NCSU so much more if I had cared about collegiate sports… I shoulda gone to Sarah Lawrence or something! heaheha Bah!
