Waves of Desperation….

Friday, July 18th, 2008

2005 was one of the worst years for hurricanes on record—and it was also the year that a British explorer and adventurer named Dom Mee tried to cross the North Atlantic from Canada to England in a tiny 14-foot boat powered only by a kite..

The adventure and the hurricane ravaged seas collided—truncating Dom’s efforts 39 days into the quest.

He was battered at various times by hurricanes Irene, Maria, Katrina and Ophelia while they were in the open ocean. But, it was the remnants of Hurricane Rita that finally doomed the expedition.

His little vessel capsized 8 times—and filled with water. At one point, he actually clung to the hull of the boat for 5 hours before another massive wave righted the craft.

When he was rescued shortly thereafter by the Canadian Coast Guard his boat the Little Murka, was left to it drift aimlessly at sea.

Eventually the barnacle encrusted vessel washed ashore in Ireland.

Mee was reunited with the craft—which still contained the waterproof video camera he used for recording his odyssey.

The tape was still good—and what follows are 10 of some of the most dramatic minutes of video you’ll ever see of a man desperate against the elements…

~~~ WARNING: Like the ocean Dom was sailing, the video contains SALTY language ~~~
But—there’s more to the story than this video.
After Mee was rescued—he penned this firsthand account for the Britian’s Guardian.
The article was written BEFORE the tape surfaced—because he concludes his story with the explanation that he escaped only with his life and that “the sea took everything else.”
The discovery of the video adds a thrilling post-script to this harrowing attempt to best nature.
Just When You Think The Stew’s Cooked…
Thursday, July 17th, 2008
Although it’s been a while since we’ve had a taste of political stew—It doesn’t mean the fire’s out and the stew is cold..
poitical-stew-graphic.png
It’s just been simmering a bit, waiting to get stirred up again.
JABBIN’ AT THEM ALL…
The folks who gave us this great parody about John Kerry and George Bush back in 2004 are back at it again.
This time the folks from Jib-Jab have taken on Bush, Cheney, the Clinton’s, Obama and McCain in a piece of satire that’s ACTUALLY funny.
Editors at The New Yorker, take note—this is how you do political humor:
IT’S POLITICS—NOT PERSONAL…
A stunningly unusual event occurred the other day in this campaign.
John McCain made a speech—praising Barack Obama.
McCain was appearing before the NAACP convention—and used his opening remarks to offer some sincere words about his opponent.
It’s been said the Senate is the worlds biggest gentlemen’s club—and both McCain and Obama are members of that club.
And yesterday John McCain proved his is indeed a gentleman. He understands you can disagree with someone without being disagreeable.
YOU CAN BANK ON HER RETURN….
Disagreeable could have been the middle name of Hillary Clinton when she ran against Obama.
And although the two have put on a public face of unity—it appears Hillary hasn’t given up on the White House.
hillarywatchgraphic.pngShe has started collecting money for 2012.
As you can read here—she’s asking folks to donate so that she can use the money for either a senate or presidential run.
I guess unity only goes so far…
The Manchurian Muslim….
Wednesday, July 16th, 2008
In 1959, writer Richard Condon, penned a thriller about the son of a prominent political family who is brainwashed into becoming an unwilling assassin for the Communist Party.
The Manchurian Candidate was subsequently made into two movies, in 1962 and 2004.
A review by The New Yorker called the book among other things: “Brilliant…Wild and exhilarating.”
Now, The New Yorker is taking a lot of heat because of it’s latest cover—depicting Barack Obama as a Manchurian Muslim running for the presidency.
new-yorker-cover.png
The editors of the magazine are defending it as satire, saying its images of a gun-toting wife, burning American flag, Turban, and portrait of Osama Bin Laden is meant to poke fun of all the whispering campaigns aimed at Obama.
But the satire has fallen flat—instead earning the haughty magazine round criticism from everyone from John McCain to other magazine editors like those from Newsweek.
For satire to work—people have to “get” what being satirized.
But, in the case of this magazine cover—a lot of folks think it’s depicting something real—and they just assume that Obama really is a Muslim and that he is bent on destroying American values.
But if they stopped to think it through—they’re realize it wasn’t true.
If Obama was a real Muslim, once he saw the cartoon, he’d have reacted by rioting and burning down the offices of The New Yorker.
