Conventional Stew….

Monday, August 25th, 2008

On the eve of the Democratic convention, a tornado touched down outside of Denver—perhaps apt symbolism for the tornado of activity that’s occurring on both sides of the aisle as the Dem’s get ready to make it official…

EATING THOSE WORDS….

The McCain camp has been creating a few tornados of its own…

Joe Biden hadn’t been the officially named running mate for more than a few hours before a new McCain Ad hit the airwaves using Biden’s own words to dis Obama…

Of course, I recall when a certain presidential contender named George Bush called the economic plan of Ronald Reagan, “voodoo economics.”

That’s the same George Bush that ended up serving two terms as Reagan’s veep, and a term himself as president.

CLINTON’S CARPS HELP McCAIN…

As soon as it became official that Hillary wasn’t going to get the nod, the McCain people let loose with another ad—using her words to hit Obama upside the head a few more times.

One gets the feeling this ad was already in the can, ready to go as a “look what Obama’s veep choice really thinks about him” should Hillary have gotten the nod.

But, instead of using the “What Does Barack Obama’s running mate say about Barack Obama” tag line that would have been used if Hillary was the choice for VP pick, they just re-wrote the front end a bit to say ” she won millions of votes but isn’t on his ticket.”

TEXT MESSAGE—ROUND TWO…

Meanwhile, the Dems are also busy trying to create a whirlwind of excitment over the convention.

As you recall, the Obama camp tried to generate as much buzz as possible by withholding their V.P. pick by saying they’d announce it by text message.

But, they waited too long, and hours before Biden was officially announced watchers had figured out the Secret Service was at Biden’s home, and the private aircraft charted to take him to Illinois was tracked landing in Delaware.

Now— they Dems are trying to build that same excitement into the first night of the convention that will feature a video tribute to Ted Kennedy…

kenndy-headshot.png

There are scores of “will Teddy show or not” stories like this being generated.

Although a Kennedy appearance would certainly generate interest—I dare say—he’s no Michael Phelps, and I suspect ratings for the convention’s first night won’t be all that great—Teddy—or no Teddy on stage.

Just When You Think The Stew’s Cooked…

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Although it’s been a while since we’ve had a taste of political stew—It doesn’t mean the fire’s out and the stew is cold..
poitical-stew-graphic.png
It’s just been simmering a bit, waiting to get stirred up again.

JABBIN’ AT THEM ALL…

The folks who gave us this great parody about John Kerry and George Bush back in 2004 are back at it again.

This time the folks from Jib-Jab have taken on Bush, Cheney, the Clinton’s, Obama and McCain in a piece of satire that’s ACTUALLY funny.

Editors at The New Yorker, take note—this is how you do political humor:

IT’S POLITICS—NOT PERSONAL…

A stunningly unusual event occurred the other day in this campaign.

John McCain made a speech—praising Barack Obama.

McCain was appearing before the NAACP convention—and used his opening remarks to offer some sincere words about his opponent.

It’s been said the Senate is the worlds biggest gentlemen’s club—and both McCain and Obama are members of that club.

And yesterday John McCain proved his is indeed a gentleman. He understands you can disagree with someone without being disagreeable.

YOU CAN BANK ON HER RETURN….

Disagreeable could have been the middle name of Hillary Clinton when she ran against Obama.

And although the two have put on a public face of unity—it appears Hillary hasn’t given up on the White House.

hillarywatchgraphic.pngShe has started collecting money for 2012.

As you can read here—she’s asking folks to donate so that she can use the money for either a senate or presidential run.

I guess unity only goes so far…

She’s Still In The Stew….

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The political chefs continue cooking—but who would have thought they’d still be using essence de la Hillary to spice up the political stew this late in the season…

METAPHORICALLY SPEAKING….

As we close in on the West Virginia primary, the “never-say-quit” girl continues to run, even as her financial gas tanks empty and an ever increasing number of Superdelegates leave her side of the road to the White House creating more and more potholes for her to navigate around….

hillary-in-crocs-jaws.png

Caught in the grips of the crocodile’s jaws, she’s yelling “full steam ahead to the White House” while the beast is about to crush her while doing the death roll underwater…

EXIT STAGE LEFT….

Back in the 60’s—one of the lesser known Saturday morning cartoon characters from the Hanna-Barbera stable was a pink lion known as Snagglepuss...

snagglepuss.png

When he got into trouble one of his running tag lines was “exit stage left..”

Now, would be a good time for Hillary to figure out an exit strategy… The longer she waits—the less graceful it will be…

VEEPING THROUGH THE KEYHOLE….

There are some indications Clinton’s trying to open the door to her departure by angling to become Obama’s Veep…

Her biographer, Carl Bernstein, says that in this interview you can read here..

hillary-vp.png

In the meantime, a newly created political group called VOTEBOOTH— which was formed just before the Pennsylvania primary— has been pushing the Hillary for vice president issue everywhere it can.

But, as you can read hereVotebooth is actually made up of Clinton operatives and supporters. Another backdoor hint that Hillary is hoping to snag the v.p. spot???

Things standing in the way of that would be Clinton’s high negatives, and Michelle Obama’s reported extreme dislike of Hillary…

WHOSE THAT LADY?

obama-mccain.png

Meanwhile both McCain and Obama are now completely ignoring Hillary as they wage their campaigns.

Instead when they talk about opponents, they talk about each other—not her.

Further emphasizing his new campaign focus, Obama is now visiting states without upcoming primaries—indicating he’s not worried about her winning this Tuesday’s primary in West Virginia…
