Eye See, Eye Think…

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

There’s an old expression which says, “perception is reality..”

So today, we’ll provide the perception—you provide the reality…

6.gif

The 3-D effect in this photo is provided by rapidly shifting multiple images—much like the multiple images used in cartoon animation…
The persistence of vision provides the depth of image for the brain…

ALL BOXED IN….

The 3-D effect is also used in this bit of “street magic” by this illusionist.
But he doesn’t rely on animation to accomplish this trick…

GETTING AHEAD….

Because we are used to seeing things a certain way—-the brain automatically assumes things are ALWAYS that way….

Despite the fact the image of the face is inverted—the brain “wants” to see it in 3-D…

DRAGON YOUR FEAT….

This illusion works the same way, with regard to your brain “wanting” things to be the way it is used to seeing them…

But, fooling the brain can only go so far, as you’ll see at the end of this video….

Seems your eyes lie….

Like the Eagles said in their classic song, “Honey, you can’t hide your lyin’ eyes..”

You Can’t Always Believe Your Eyes….

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Some things just aren’t right—no matter how you look at them….

lying-eyes.png

So take a look at this collection of stuff—and decided for yourself if you can believe your eyes…

FACING NATURE..

Below is what looks like a nice nature scene—or is it?

What do you see?

bird-lady.png

Most folks see birds nesting in a tree..

…Do you also see a woman’s face with her hair hanging down the side?

MODELING IS A DOG EAT DOG WORLD……..

The central European country of Slovakia is known most recently as one of a number of countries that re-emerged after the break-up of the Soviet Union…

Now, Slovakia is trying to become famous as the place where you can take your dog to learn how to be a model.

As you can see here—a lot of people think their dog has what it takes to become the next super-model fur-sure…

RING OF CONFUSION…..

It looks like a simple bell.

Perhaps, even an antique bell…

oopart-bell.png

But this bell is REALLY, REALLY antique—if its origins are indeed true.

In 1944 a West Virginia man was breaking up some coal—and when he smashed apart one lump—the bell emerged from inside.

Now, it takes millions of years for coal to form.. And if the bell was inside that coal, it would have to have been left on earth well before humans ever came on the scene…

The bell was analyzed at the University of Oklahoma, which supposedly found:

…it contained an unusual mixture of metals, different from any modern usage…

The bell is classified by some archaeologists as an OOPART, which stands for Out Of Place ARTifact.

You can read more about OOPARTS here in this extensive collection, but will your eyes believe what you are seeing?

Exercise Your Mind…

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

There’s an awful lot of concern these days about obesity…

fatstevie2.png

Everyone from the government to insurance companies are worried about folks who don’t get enough exercise…

But the mind is a muscle too—and it needs exercise…

So, to help keep your mind from getting flabby— here’s a few exercises for it….

EYE CAN’T SEE THAT…

This one is all about what happens in school.. What word do you see?

teach-learn.png

Most folks see TEACH… But did you see what’s reflected? Live an LEARN, I say…

THE GIRAFFE TEST….

They use this test to see if you can learn from your mistakes…

1. How do you put a giraffe into a refrigerator?

Stop and think about it and decide on your answer before you scroll down.

giraffe.png

The answer: Open the refrigerator, put in the giraffe, and close the door.

This question tests whether you tend to do simple things in an overly complicated way.

2. How do you put an elephant into a refrigerator?

Did you say, open the refrigerator, put in the elephant, and close the refrigerator?

Wrong.

Correct Answer: Open the refrigerator, take out the giraffe, put in the elephant and close the door.

This tests your ability to think through the repercussions of your previous actions.

3. The Lion, the King of the Jungle, is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal does not attend?

lion.png

Answer: The Elephant. That’s because he’s in the refrigerator. You just put him in there. This tests your memory.

Okay, even if you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you still have one more chance to recover.

4. There is a river you must cross but it is used by crocodiles, and you do not have a boat. How do you manage it?

crocodials.png

Answer: You jump into the river and swim across. Remember, all the crocodiles are attending the animal meeting.

How’d you do?

IT’S ALL ABOUT MOI….

Finally— one last exercise…. What’s the word you see here?

me-you.png

Just about everyone sees “ME” … Most don’t even notice, “YOU”

Is your brain hurting from all this exercise?

Nope… Well—just wait till you wake up tomorrow…Your brain will be soooo sore !!!!

Now You See It, Now You Don’t…

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

A few posts back, we ran an item that contained this optical illusion— goodorevil.png

—which had GOOD and EVIL embedded in the same word.

We then asked folks which one (or both) they could detect at first glance.

Since that time we’ve been inundated with billions of requests clamoring for more.

(Well, actually, it was only ONE of my NBC-17 colleagues who said, “you ought to do more of those things with the words.”)

redbrain1.pngSo, in the interest of helping you to keep your brain exercised—here’s a few more of “those things.”

I CAN SEE THAT…

What word do you see here?

optical-illusion.png

Most folks can see the word “OPTICAL” in the yellow… But the word, “ILLUSION” is also there in blue….

EVEN A CHILD CAN READ IT…

Read the sentence in the triangle. What does it say?

double.png

I’m guessing you read it as, A BIRD IN THE BUSH.

But look again.

The word “THE” is actually repeated twice. The brain tends to skip over things like that when it processes what isn’t normal.

This explains why for some, it’s better to let your computer’s spell checker do the proof-reading.

TRAIN YOURSELF TO BE A BETTER OBSERVER….

wheres-the-train.png

Take a look at this photo. There is a train in it.

Well, strictly speaking—the train isn’t in the picture yet… but if you click on this clip below you’ll see how this active railroad line suddenly becomes a market in Bangkok, Thailand.

Do I hear any more clamoring????

Bit & Pieces, Odds & Ends Version7.0

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

More Rants, ruminations and reflections that are floating around in my over-sized head—just dying to come out….

THE PRIDE O’ NORTH CAROLINA….

Kelly Pickler has done this state proud..

picklerheadshot.png

Recently she appeared on the TV show Are You Smarter Than A 5th grader—and proved she wasn’t even smarter than a 3rd grader

As the clip posted below shows—she couldn’t answer the 3rd grade geography question which asked: What European country has Budapest as its capital?

Kelly alternately told us she thought:

  • Europe was a country
  • That she’d never heard of Budapest
  • That she knew they spoke French there
  • Asked if France WAS a country
  • Told us she didn’t think France was a country

When she was finally told that Budapest was the capital of Hungary—she said she’d never heard of that place either.

But I don’t want Kelly to worry…. That’s ’cause I know she’ll do great on MY new game show called—“Are You Dumber Than A Box Of Rocks?”

WHO NEEDS A SPELLCHECKER…

I recently came across this little item and was stunned that not only could I could read it with ease—but so could my 7-year-old….

bluebrain-1.png

Turns out the human brain doesn’t always see spelling—but rather recognizes patterns..

Not Olny srmat poelpe can raed tihs.I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rgh it pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

This is great news! No longer will I have to worry about spell-checking my blog…Of course— this presumes I actually know which FIRST and LAST letter belong in each word I write!!

OPTICAL CONFUSION…

And speaking of how the brain processes stuff—I’m told—that there’s not a lot of difference between Good and Evil, as this little picture shows..

goodorevil.png

Look closely—you’ll see the word EVIL embedded in the word GOOD

Which word did you see first?
