A Drought Of Ideas…

When it comes to winter—most folks would prefer it not be cold, wet and snowy….

Here in North Carolina—we’ve got good news and bad news for you about this winter…

The good news is—we’re going to have a fairly dry winter.

The bad news is—we’re going to have a fairly dry winter.

The dry conditions are going to exacerbate our already serious drought.

This link here from the National Weather Service’s North Carolina State Climate Office contains a report outlining the 2007-2008 Winter Drought Outlook…

And it’s not pretty.

To boil down the 10 pages of text and graphs to its basics—in order for the drought to end this winter, the state NOW needs as much as 24 inches of rain.

And the chances of that happening—according to the report— LESS THAN 4 PER CENT !

The report says that will leave the state relatively dry heading into the growing season in the Spring and Summer of 2008.

The report ends by warning officials that they should develop long term plans to address water availability, needs and resources.

Right now, a group of task forces appointed by Governor Easley are looking at the drought situation.

But since water is EVERYBODY’S issue—it only seems fair to ask—what do YOU think we ought to do.

Post your ideas here—or send ‘em to my email at ssbraccia@wncn.com..

We’ll publish them in an upcoming post.

Although our leaders may have a drought of ideas right now—I’m willing to bet our readers have an ocean of ‘em !
